About Quilting and Tufting a Mattress
The Mattress Quilt
As you shop for a new mattress, it's easy to get lost amid all of the terms and jargon you read and hear from salespeople. With so many terminologies and new technologies, it can be difficult to understand what effect they have on your mattress. Tufting is one of those terms that most consumers come across as they try to find a new mattress. The mattress quilt is the top layer of the mattress, and it adds thickness and softness in addition to keeping the comfort layers below from shifting or moving out of place.
Tufting is the act of securing the quilt to the layers beneath. Years ago, mattresses were tufted by sewing buttons into the mattress. The buttons acted like an anchor that held the materials in place. Today, tufting is performed by sewing the top layer, or quilt, to the layers underneath it.
Keeping Comfort in Place
The tufting process creates peaks and valleys on the mattress surface. In doing so, comfort materials are locked into place. Since the comfort layers at the top of the mattress provide a sleeper with the most noticeable comfort and support, tufting is an excellent way to ensure that the comfort and support stay uniform and don't shift or diminish over time. Some brands maintain the tufted look and still assemble mattresses by hand for a greater eye to detail, usually the more luxurious brands like Vispring and Hästens.
